2019 Mazda6 Receives Two Top Ratings for Safety in 2019

How safe is the 2019 Mazda6?

Last month, we heard that the 2019 Mazda6 has won not one, but two top ratings for safety from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The first was a top rating of good+ for its LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) features. The second was a Top Safety Pick rating when equipped with certain headlights. Keep reading below to learn about these two ratings.

2019 Mazda6 LATCH system

How does a vehicle get a good+ rating for LATCH from the IIHS? Well, they have to conform to five specific criteria. First, the lower anchors must not be more than ¾ inches into the seat bight. Second, the lower anchors need to be easy to move, with a clearance angle greater than 54 degrees. Third, the force required to attach a child seat connector to the lower anchor must be less than 40 pounds. Fourth, the tether anchors must be easily reachable, either in the vehicle’s rear deck or in the middle of the seatback. Lastly, there must be no hardware around the tether anchor that could be confused for the tether anchor. These criteria are designed to make the LATCH system easy to use.

2019 Mazda6 Top Safety Pick Rating

How does a vehicle become a Top Safety Pick according to the IIHS? The IIHS rates vehicles based on standardized crash tests. They must get a good rating in driver-side small overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint tests. They must get good or acceptable for the passenger-side small overlap front test. Lastly, they are tested in front crash prevention and headlight tests. They need advanced or superior for front crash prevention and either good or acceptable for a headlight rating.
