Should I Sell or Trade-In My Old Car?

It’s a pretty common problem during the car buying process, but everyone needs to find out what they are going to do with their old car. They could sell it, trade it in, scrap it if it’s in really bad condition, whatever the case is they have a lot of different options ahead of them.

What is the best route to go for when it comes to getting rid of your old car though? Obviously, each choice has its different pros and cons that will affect the bottom line for you. Selling a car privately can net you some more money while trading it in saves you a lot of money. So, let’s take a walk through the differences and see which one might work for you?

Should I Sell or Trade-In My Old Car?

One of the biggest and most obvious differences between both methods is time. You’ll have to sink a lot more time and energy into selling a car on your own. Private selling means the advertising time, meeting with and talking to potential buyers, handling the paperwork, and anything else is all on you. With a trade-in, you simply head into a dealership and basically swap cars with the dealership. It’s a nice, convenient, and hassle-free way to simply get that car out of the way and into your new one.

The other big difference is the potential profits from the sale of your old car. Selling a car privately may net you more, but there’s a lot more that goes into it. You’ll have to factor in taxes and advertising prices when it comes to figuring out what your potential profits might be. There’s also the trouble of being upside-down on a loan which makes selling a car privately almost impossible. Trade-ins are usually netting you less in terms of worth, but save you time and effort.
