Why Is My Mazda's Check Engine Light On?

The check engine light is an all too common sight for motorists. We often see the light come on, seemingly out of nowhere, but what could it mean? You should get it checked out immediately, but it isn't always an indication of something serious. Nonetheless, let's explore some possible explanations for why your check engine light is on.

Oxygen sensor

One reason why the light might be on is that the oxygen (O2) sensor needs to be replaced. This sensor measures the unburned oxygen in the Mazda's exhaust system. If the sensor is damaged and doesn't get repaired or replaced, your engine will use more fuel than necessary which will, in turn, harm your fuel economy. It can also cause damage to your spark plugs and catalytic converter.

Gas cap

A simple problem like a missing or loose gas cap can be the source of your check engine light. The cap helps to maintain pressure inside the fuel tank and prevents gasoline fumes from being released when your car is off. Get a new cap and maybe your light will turn off.
