Podcast: Customer Interview

Welcome, listeners. It is I, your host for the month. It’s Matt. And I’m here at the actual store in Puente Hills. It’s PH Mazda. And what I’m trying to do for everybody now is just trying to give a little bit of a different perspective. So I’m trying to actually get some customers that come in after they’ve purchased their cars, see if they want to talk to me a little bit and tell me about it. I was lucky enough to find my guy here, newfound friend of mine, really cool dude. His name is Josh. Now Josh, first off, thank you for doing this with me, man.

What made you come all the way to Puente Hills for your car?

They hooked me up, man [laughter]. They hooked me up. They gave me a deal I could not refuse.

Plain and simple, huh?

Sometimes you got to go to the source to get something better.

That makes sense. And not only that. I mean, you’re already getting great deals because you are catching onto the Black Friday sales events and everything like that. But something about this dealership here in particular just kind of– they tend to just turn it up a notch.

Yeah, man. They really take care of me. They took care of me, I should say. I came in. I spoke with somebody on the phone. We had the conversation. I was like, “All right. I’ll make it out there to see what you guys got on Black Friday.” And sure enough, they made me a deal could not refuse, so I had to go with it.

That’s awesome, man. So what did you end up picking up?
Josh 01:48
The Mazda 6 Touring in red. In red. I hope it’s not a cop magnet [laughter]. But I had to. I couldn’t turn down that red, man. It looks so beautiful.

That’s it right there. Look.

Yeah, man. And look at them tires though. The wheels.

Well, the wheels, I had to go with that color combo, man. They told me they had one with black wheels. I was like, “That’s the one I want.”

And initially, they gave me the red with, I think, it was their regular silver wheels. And I was like, “Do you guys got the black ones, by a chance?” And they’re like, “You know what, we’ll hook you up.” So I was like, “Say no more [laughter]. Take care of me. Please.”

Yeah, man.

That’s awesome. So all right. So tell me what else about the car really made you choose this one?
Josh 02:31
Honestly, man, I was looking at a lot of other sedans. And I’m sure you’ve heard of Apple CarPlay, right?

Yeah.
Josh 02:38
So I’m an iPhone guy, a heavy iPhone guy. So I was just looking for something that had that in particular. And I noticed that Mazda was actually integrating them into all their newer vehicles. Not everybody’s catching up, but slowly but surely, some people are. So I was just like, “You know what, I like this feature that comes with this Touring model.” So I just jumped on it, and I was like, “Yeah, man. That’s what I want. That’s what I like.” I like having the GPS straight from my phone. It just works. It just works.

Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It just works.

And that’s the one thing that Mazda’s always been doing. I mean, anyone that pays attention, Mazda really steps up what they do tech-wise. So they’re all about using technology as far as becoming gas savers, as far as safety features, as far as– and let’s just touch on that a little bit if you don’t mind. Your car – correct me if I’m wrong – that model there actually comes with the heads-up display?
Josh 03:33
It does. Yeah. So what one of the guys was showing me is it has that HUD or HUD, I guess, what they call it, heads-up display, like you said, and it shows you the miles per hour. So as you’re driving, you don’t need to look down to your speedometer.

Oh, the dashboard speedometers.
Josh 03:49
Yeah. So it’s right in front of you. So as you’re driving, you can see how fast you’re driving. And it shows the blind spot monitoring as well. So if there’s a car coming up on your left or on your right, you’ll see the little dots on there as well as on the mirrors, too, but you’ll see them right there, so you don’t even need to look over to actually see your mirrors. I mean, you still need to, of course. But it gives you that freedom of being able to just look there instead of having to turn, so. I like that. I feel like that’s a really good safety feature, in my opinion.

Yeah. Absolutely. Especially with something like, “Ooh, he’s got this shiny red.”

Yeah. You know what I mean [laughter]? I got to make sure nothing’s coming up on the side, creeping up on me [laughter].

Yeah. Absolutely. So I’ve been hanging around the shop a lot, talking to some of the dealers and everything. Of course, doing some reading too. I saw that that car actually was given by Car and Driver Magazine– they got five stars just overall rating.

Yeah. Yeah. I was actually looking into safety as well. I got some little ones. So I want to make sure I’m in a safe car. I want to make sure I’m in something that rides comfortably, my family can enjoy, and if, God forbid, something were to happen, we’re in a safe car.

You’re safe. Yeah.

Yeah. We’re in the safest car that’s possible. Yeah.

Yeah. So that’s great that you do that, man. Have you actually tried to take a seat in the back?
Josh 05:11
You know what, not yet [laughter]. But my kids love it. They always fall asleep. Always falling asleep. So, I mean, that leads me to believe that it’s pretty comfortable back seats [laughter]. So we’ll see. We’ll see.

Maybe I’ll let the wife drive and kiddo front. We’ll see. We’ll see [laughter].

So I know it’s been pretty packed around this time, as you kind of expect, because they have just crazy deals for everybody out there. So maybe you can just tell me a little bit how you managed to kind of get in and get out. I noticed you kind of came and you were in here for – I don’t know – maybe hour or so?
Josh 05:49
Yeah. I kind of just came in, signed some papers, shook some hands, and that was really it. Like I said, the majority of my deal was kind of set in stone over the phone. I kind of told them what I wanted, what I was looking for. So when I came in, they had a couple options for me. They did have the Sport and the Touring for me so I can test out both. I did take them both out for a spin. And I kind of was just sold on the Touring. Overall, I liked the feel of it. I liked, obviously, like I said, the color, the wheel combo, and the interior, man. It’s like you’re walking into– it’s a luxury interior to me. So I really liked it. It was definitely an upgrade from my old vehicle. So, yeah, to me, I just really liked the car, so I just ended up going with the Touring instead.

Yeah. No, I definitely think you made a good decision, man. For one, the outside, it looks good. It looks pretty sporty, to be honest.

Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. It’s–

The inside, it is pretty luxurious. It’s got that– what I like is that infotainment center. It’s got a pretty big display.
Josh 06:48
Yeah. So what’s crazy about that display is it’s only touch screen when you’re parked. So when you’re driving, you can’t reach out and touch it. That’s what one of the guys was telling me. I was trying to touch it while I was driving. He’s all, “No, no, no. You got to use the center knob.” So I guess they have a knob right in the middle, and you basically move that knob, and it highlights whatever icon you’re moving on screen or whatever section, and you can rotate. And it’s something you got to get used to. But I was trying it out and was like, “I can get used to this. It’s not too bad.” So, I mean, yeah, I feel like it’s a little safer than reaching over to the screen and touching it. So, yeah, I like that.

Yeah. It’s easier to keep it clean too. No fingerprints on it.
Josh 07:25
Right. Right. Exactly [laughter]. Yeah.

So you said you called somebody here on the phone. So just kind of walk me through if you don’t mind. Probably went to the website and then–

Yeah. So, yeah, I found their website. Like I said, I was doing my research. I checked out a couple dealerships out here in San Diego, but nothing really caught my attention. They didn’t really have what I was looking for in particular. They told me they could bring it from somewhere, but I was like, “No. I need to take advantage of these Black Friday deals.” So I looked a little a ways. It’s not too far from me. About two hours, two and a half hour drive. So I took the drive, brought the kids with me, brought the wife. And we just made it happen. We came up here. Like I said, I talked on the phone with these guys, and they told me, “Yeah. Come out. I got a couple things for you. We’ll talk, and we’ll see what we can do.” And like I said, I had done a lot of the preapproval stuff over the phone just to kind of make my trip quick. I got kids. Sometimes they can get fussy, especially being in a dealership for a while. You know how that goes. Two, three hours in there, maybe four. So I took care of all that stuff at home. And then once I got there, they told me, “Yeah. You just pick what you want, and we’ll go through the process.” And like I said, I picked out that Touring and say no more. We got the deal taken care of.

I am doing this podcast episode and I’ve tried to do a little something special, a little something different. I’ve actually been trying to get in touch with people to give you a different perspective. So these people that I’m bringing in on these podcasts are actually people that are looking at purchasing a Mazda for themselves. We’ll be asking them why, how, all the good questions. What is it about Mazda that makes them want to purchase one? So I met with this guy today. His name is Peter. Can I call you Pete?

So you were telling me– off air, you were saying that you have quite a bit of background in the industry.
Peter 01:09
Yeah. Well, I used to sell cars many years ago, and I’ve been in management as well. And so I kind of know the industry. I’ve worked on cars. I worked in the service department as well, a few years back. So I’m pretty much immersed in the auto industry. I guess you could say that.

That’s probably an advantage that you have. Right?
Peter 01:35
I could say that. Yes. I think so.

So what is it that you’re in here looking for, man?
Peter 01:42
You know what? I’ve had a roadster before. I had a Honda roadster. It was an Peter000.
Matt 01:48
Oh, the Peter000s. Yeah. Yeah.
Peter 01:50
Yeah. It was a fun car. And so I’ve always looked at the Miata. The Miata, I’ve driven it, and it drives like a little go kart. It’s a really fun car. And being out in LA a lot, it’s sometimes kind of hard to find places to park. And so the car is great on gas. It’s a fun car to drive. I really don’t need a lot of room. So between my wife and I– well, my wife prefers that I have a car. I really would rather have a motorcycle, but you know how that goes.

So this is your compromise?

This is my compromise. Exactly. So I’m going with the little Miata.

Cool, man. So yeah. The Miatas, a lot of people would say they are the roadster that kind of made it popular. You know?
Peter 02:37
Yeah.
Matt 02:37
A lot of people are just– once you start in a Miata, I notice a lot of people actually stick with the Miata and they keep on going. So besides the fun, being able to drive, and it running like a go kart, and just being real fun, I mean, what do you plan on using this car for? Is it just cool little drives out on the town with the wife?
Peter 03:00
Well, I definitely just see that happening. I mean, I like to go out to the wineries out over in Temecula area. And so it’s really cool. They always have really great weather out there. And having a convertible is a pretty cool car to have. I’ve had a Mazda. My first Mazda was an RX7. It was also a two-seater. And so it was a fun car. I loved that vehicle. So Mazda is just one of those few vehicles that are still being built out in Japan. And I just really, really am attached to the Mazda brand.

You know what’s really cool about the Miatas is that– well, Mazda period. Mazda is one of those brands that keep on using technology to further advance, whether it be saving on gas mileage, or safety, or even just infotainment type of deals. The Miata has kind of included some of that infotainment. They actually have like a really big screen. That’s really cool.
Peter 04:02
Yes. For sure. The technology on these vehicles is actually that of, for example, Mercedes Benz. They’re up to date with their technology, and everything is just at arm’s reach. Everything is so close, everything’s perfect, and the cockpit is almost like being in an airplane. You know what I mean? Like a jet. So I really do love the way it holds everything really nice and tight.

Right. Right on. Now, do you know exactly what kind of gas mileage you’re getting on this?
Peter 04:37
Well, as a matter of fact, let’s see. If I’m not mistaken, it’s something like about 26, 35. So on the highway, you’re going to get 35. I don’t know about my lead foot. I’ll probably end up with like 32, 33 more or less. But on the city, you’re getting 26. So that’s why I’m getting it. It’s still an economical car, it’s not expensive at all, it’s very affordable, it’s a fun ride, it has all the technology features that I’m looking for, and like I said before, I could park it anywhere. It fits everywhere.

Yeah. That does come in handy, especially out in LA. Like you said, you were spending a lot of time out there.
Peter 05:17
Yeah.

So real quick, man. I’m going to let you get back to your car shopping. So just real fast, though, because you have some experience in the industry and you’ve been around it for a long time, we’re on October now. November is coming up really soon. And I know around November, a lot of dealerships are starting to tell you about the Black Friday deals, closing out the year, trying to give you the best deals possible. From your experience, do you think now is a good time to start shopping or would you prefer or even advise someone to maybe just wait a couple of months?
Peter 05:53
Well, right now, it’s starting to get a little competitive. So a lot of dealerships are going to start selling the vehicles at the best price they possibly can, which you and I know that it’s normally typically the same price that they’ve always been offering them. But they get a little bit more competitive during the close end of year because the 2019s are just around the corner. This is why I’m getting the 2018. And so it is a good time to definitely start shopping. If you’re really interested in getting a vehicle, right now is a really good time. Because I have a business, getting the vehicle, I can actually write it off into my business. So it really does save me a lot of money at the end of the year, for next year. And so I can get a lot write offs out of it. So this is why I do my shopping during close towards the end of the year. And so I just don’t want to do– there’s going to be a lot of things going on at December. So I want to get my shopping done before that. And being that we’re getting closer to the end of this month, now Halloween is upon us. So yeah. I thought maybe getting the vehicle would be a really good time to do it now.

Oh, man. Me and my girl, we’re going to be Bonnie and Clyde, bro. Yeah. I’m going to be all dressed up to the nines. I’m going to have my boy’s little machine gun.

And it’s going to be pretty cool. So I won’t have to wear makeup, which is nice [laughter]. I’ll still look sharp.

And so I was looking at the Miata Sport, but I decided to go with the Grand Touring. It’s a little bit more, but it has more of the features that I’m looking for. And it happens that they had both the Sport and the Grand Touring. And so I’m going to go along with the Grand Touring. And yeah. They answered all my questions, they were very helpful, and I can’t stand liars. And this dealership really is honest. They’re really honest with what they’re doing. They’re really cool people. So I recommend this dealership for sure.

Welcome, everybody. We are here at Puente Hills Mazda. I am here with Nathan White, and he is the service manager here at Puente Hills Mazda. How are you doing, Nathan?

Good. How are you doing?

Doing very good. Doing very good. So tell us about yourself, Nathan. What got you started in the car industry?
Nathan 03:02
Well, I started in the industry as a service advisor about 30 years ago. Worked in the service departments for approximately 5 years and then moved into the parts department. Worked as a parts counter person. Moved up to a parts managing position. Got back into the service side of the business, and here we are, the service manager at Puente Hills Mazda.

Wow. What an interesting story, Nathan. That’s super awesome. Tell us a little bit about your service department. What’s so special here?
Nathan 03:27
Well, service department, right now we have three service advisors. I have nine certified Mazda technicians, one of which is a senior master tech. And we also have four master techs under that one. And also, too, probably, I would guess, a well over a hundred years of Mazda experience out there in the shop.
Manny 03:45
Wow. So you guys have a lot of experience here. You guys know– very knowledgeable with all your vehicles. That’s super great to know. How long does it take for a technician to move up master?
Nathan 03:54
Usually, a technician will come in and start out as a loop technician. And depending on how hungry he is, he can move up within six months.
Manny 04:02
Awesome. Wow. So people can really level up here. That’s awesome. So, Nathan, tell us. Why should Mazda customers come and bring their cars to get serviced here, at Puente Hills Mazda?
Nathan 04:12
Well, like I stated before, our technicians are all Mazda certified. We have state of the art Mazda diagnostic tools, over 100 years of experience working on Mazdas. And that’s what we do. We work on Mazdas.

Oh, wow. Awesome. Is there anything that a Mazda customer might learn by getting their car serviced here, at Puente Hills Mazda?
Nathan 04:32
Well, there is a general thought out there that going to an independent shop is going to be less expensive than it is coming to the dealership. And that simply is not the case. Our costs compete with the independent shops on all levels.
Manny 04:47
Awesome. That’s good to know. Hopefully, all customers will keep that in mind. What kind of advice would you give to all customers, to anybody about maintaining their car?
