The Mazda CX-9 is one mid-size SUV you cannot ignore thanks to its fluid and simplistic design. A vehicle that is brimming with character and substance, the CX-9 offers a wide range of features along with a peppy and enthusiastic powertrain. But that doesn’t go without saying that there are just as many competitors in the market that offer the same value proposition, the Toyota 4Runner being one of them. Even with that distinction, there is a certain intrinsic value of the CX-9 that keeps it one step ahead of the 4Runner. Let’s see how the CX-9 manages to stay ahead of the 4Runner.
The 2021 Mazda CX-9 receives an interesting set of updates that include an updated infotainment system with a 10.3-inch display, wireless smartphone charging pad offered as standard on the Touring, Grand Touring, & Signature models, availability of the Carbon Edition package for the Grand Touring trim, new paddle shifters and an improved camera system for the Grand Touring and Signature trims, and a new set of standard safety features for the Signature trim. The Toyota 4Runner offers more horsepower than the CX-9 and this does work to its advantage. That said, the CX-9 has the potential to produce 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque from the same powertrain with the help of 93-octane premium unleaded fuel. Also, let’s not forget that the CX-9’s higher torque figures help in offering enough bursts of power throughout the rev band and all the gears making it a more enthusiastic and energetic SUV.
The 2021 CX-9 truly shines in the interior department. With three-row seating as standard, one can accommodate seven passengers at any given time giving it a more practical standpoint compared to the 4Runner. Even though the 4Runner offers an optional third-row seat, it is not as comfortable as the CX-9. The high-quality materials used in the CX-9’s cabin elevate the customer's experience every time he/she gets into the vehicle. Coming to features like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth connectivity, both SUVs offer them as standard. However, the impressive 10.25-inch touchscreen display offered in the CX-9 helps it in offering a more convenient experience to customers. Features like Wi-Fi Hotspot capability and SiriusXM subscription that are offered in the 4Runner give it a slight advantage over the CX-9. But other than that, most of the other features are available on both SUVs.
Staying true to its legacy and ideology, Mazda offers a wide list of safety features like Lane-Keeping Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, and Tire Pressure Monitoring System, to name some of them.
The 4Runner also offers a lot of these features. But it is the design, quality, and attention to detail of the 2021 Mazda CX-9 that makes it a more preferable option to the Toyota 4Runner.
