It can generate 181 horsepower, up 17 percent from last year, and 151 lb-ft of torque. That’s a lot of get-up-and-go, but there’s more than to just putting an engine in the car and calling it a day.  

Reworking large parts of the engine has pushed the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata to new heights. Mazda worked to reduce internal mass and friction with lighter pistons, exhaust loss by increasing valve opening angle and lift height, improving combustion with reworked intake ports, and a new final drive ratio to create an efficient, top-of-the-line engine. All of that work pushed the redline of the Miata from 6,800 to 7,500 rpm.
